We get excited here at Coffea when we see the coffee community in our area grow. Weather that’s through events, collaborations, new cafes, ect. The Bean in Vermillion is absolutely one of those cafes that excites us.
Leslie Gerrish and Martin Prendergast own and operate The Bean. They started in 2016 primarily serving at the Vermillion Farmers Market and other community events, moved into a shared storefront location later that year, and then in the fall of 2018 they were able to open up their own location next door in downtown Vermillion. Leslie says, “the shop is larger with more seating, outlets and a beautiful (and locally made) community table. Our friends at Coffea Roasterie helped us find our amazing espresso machine (the much needed addition) and our staff expanded as well.”
Since they’ve opened they’ve been able to keep adding more to their menu, but still focus on their main goal of serving great coffee in a welcoming space. And as Leslie said, it’s going well so far, “So far, so great! Every time I am in there and the tables are full, people are typing away, chatting with friends, or reading a book, I can't help but think "We did this. We created something great.””
Maybe you’ve heard of it, maybe you haven’t yet.. But Latte Art Competitions are gaining popularity. Baristas are learning to perfect their pours to create some amazing designs, and what better way to bring the coffee community together than through a little competition?
The Bean is hosting their first Latte Art throwdown this Friday night(tonight!). We asked them what they’re looking most forward to, “From a small business owner perspective, I hope the Latte Art Throwdown puts the Bean on the map! I hope our team is able to connect with people engaged in the industry and establish lasting relationships that can help The Bean grow.”
She added that, “From a personal perspective, I hope my team has a blast! I am so proud of Cris and his passion for this event, and The Bean in general. Our entire staff at The Bean is wonderful, and each brings such a unique talent to the team. Sure, it's a job, but I want them to have fun, feel engaged and excited to see the growth of this small business. It's a home for them too.”
If you’re looking to join in on the fun, head on down there tonight! Sign up is at 6pm, and first pour is at 7pm. More information here too. There’s going to be pizza, beer, and of course plenty of coffee! Some of the Coffea crew will be there hanging out, competing, and Laura will be one of the judges. Hope to see some of you there!
If you can’t make it tonight, make sure to check them out the next time you’re in Vermillion. They’re always making great drinks, and doing new things to get involved with the community. Every Friday they donate a portion of sales to a charity or organization in the area, it’s called “Fund it Friday”. Great people, great coffee, for a great community. Cheers to that!
