This fall we have a new drink to our fall menu, created by our Downtown Coffea Barista Samuel. The "Elio Latte" combines fresh peaches, bananas, brown sugar and nutmeg. Here are some questions we asked Samuel about his drink creation...
1. Describe your drink..
"Elio is deriving from the Greek God Helios (meaning sun) and the banana and peach carry heavy autumnal tones of warmth and sunshine. It tastes like fresh baked pie/cobbler/bananas foster. The banana is prominent in the hot latte, while it takes a back seat to the peach in the iced latte. It's also V V V GOOD as an Italian soda."
2. Why did you want to create a drink at Coffea?
"I remember actually asking Merecedes if I had to be a barista to submit a drink or if I was too young to be a flavor scientist. She replied in earnest saying I could submit anything anytime. So I went crazy messing with the idea of what flavors can (and SHOULD) be used in coffee. And it's amazing fun learning what flavors compliment and harmonize with one another."
3. Describe your journey in creating your drink..
"I wanted a warm crisp fall drink that reminded me of home and I recalled having had a lovely banana latte in Los Angeles at some small hole in the wall and wondered how they'd done it. I really wanted to play off that idea while using other ingredients that I wouldn't normally think would blend well with espresso. I set to task and gathered supplies for my adventure and took a note from my great aunt Rubye with ingredients: "oh, about this much, and maybe about...I dunno...this much of that and a sprinkle of this.""
4. If you had describe your drink with a boyband lyric, what would it be?
"I've got fire for a heart
I'm not scared of the dark
You've never seen it look so easy
I got a river for a soul
And baby you're a boat
Baby, you're my only reason" One Direction - Drag Me Down
