Luz and her husband Elpidio own and operate Finca El Meson in the Acevedo municipality of the Huila department in Colombia. Luz and Elpidio, who go by “Sandy” and “Pillo” locally, inherited this farm from Pillo’s father and began farming it about 4 years ago. They started by planting 20,000 Pink Bourbon trees on land that had previously been used for cattle. The microlot we are drinking today is among the first fruits of those trees. In addition to coffee, they also grow plantains, yucca and sugar cane. They also have 4 cows for milk.
Sandy and Pillo have three young children (two daughters and a son). This young family is not only dedicated to producing high quality coffee, but also caring for the workers that participate in the growing and harvesting of their coffee. It is very important to them that their staff is paid well and feels comfortable during their time on the farm.
