This coffee is from producer Maria Santos. Her farm is near Paez, a small village with some amazing flavor profiles. She owns a farm called Los Guaduales, a 3.5 acre coffee farm that sits at 1,880 meters above sea level. She is focused on producing specialty coffee and has very rigorous picking, sorting, fermentation, and drying practices. Maria is proud and excited to be producing coffee and wants the world to know how good coffee is from her village. Maria's coffee took 6th place with a cup score of 86.3. She was in tears when we bought her coffee and wants us to tell her story to the world. In her own words:
"I have been a coffee grower since I was a child. With my family we have planted coffee since 1998 when we formed our home. The first lot of the farm was inherited by my parents. My family is made up of my husband and my 4 children, 2 of them help me at work on the farm and the other 2 still go to school. The varieties of coffee that I have on the farm are Castillo, Colombia and Caturra. The majority of the farm work is carried out with my husband and my two older children. Little by little we have had the opportunity to improve the facilities of our farm such as drying, and thus have a permanent offer of high quality specialty coffees. My goal is to continue the production of high quality coffee and improve the quality of life for my family."

More about this coffee
In February of 2020, Coffea Roasterie was invited to Colombia to judge coffees and attend an auction for some of the best coffees in western Cauca. We sent our head roaster, Andrew Fritz! Fun facts about Best Cup Cauca: the state of Cauca has around 93,000 coffee producers. They produce 1.5 million bags of coffee each year. 30% of that coffee is produced by women!
Over 400 producers submitted coffees for the competition Andrew attended. Those coffees were narrowed down to the top 50 lots. Andrew spent four days cupping and sorting through some insanely amazing and delicious coffees. At the end of the competition he was able to purchase the coffees at a live auction with the producers present. This type of setting is an amazing opportunity for the coffee producers to showcase their producing abilities and sell their coffees well over the C-Market rate. We are honored to be a part of this process and build the coffee market for the coffee farmers in Colombia!
