This beautiful coffee comes from a group of women producers located in the town of La Yerba located in Nayarit, Mexico, one of the northernmost coffee growing regions in North America. We're proud to carry this coffee for the second time, helping to showcase the exceptional skill and dedication of these producers. In the cup, we taste berries and chocolate brownies with a creamy body.

Located on the side of the San Juan Volcano, La Yerba is a small town of 800 people whose main income is tied to coffee and avocados. The community comprises 35 Ejidatarios–communal land designed for agricultural production. Each Ejidatario, or joint landowner/farmer, has rights to a plot of land that continues indefinitely down their family line, as long as the land is under constant cultivation. This ideology dates back to Aztecs. The growers from La Yerba are part of a vertically integrated collective called Grupo Terruño Nayarita (GTN), which is a group of local, democratic coffee producing societies. GTN allows coffee producers and their communities to have more negotiating power for bank loans, organizational memory, access to shared resources, and more risk tolerance. We were able to visit GTN in Nayarit in April of 2023 to meet their staff and learn about the organization as well as visit several of the producing societies; we came away with so much respect for what they are doing and are very excited to continue our partnership with them and specifically the society of La Yerba.
