Yerson is a proud member of La Ribera, a Nasa indigenous community that has farmed coffee for generations in the lush mountains of Southwestern Colombia. Yerson, like many farmers in his community, combines ancestral methods for coffee farming with modern ones to align production with new trends in specialty coffee.
As a boy, Yerson harvested and processed coffee cherries with his family. However, when the time came for him to become more involved in coffee production, he chose to venture into the city to work in construction, building homes and apartment buildings. He dreamed of having a family and owning his own home one day.
After several years, he returned to La Ribera to farm coffee on his land. At first, he was inclined to produce commercial-grade coffee, applying the methods his elders taught him, but noticed that the younger farmers in his community used techniques to improve quality, including picking ripe cherries, controlling fermentation times, and prolonging drying.
His neighbors motivated him to process specialty grade coffee which represents higher prices for producers based on quality. They advised him during the production of his first micro-lot, resulting in the coffee we’re offering today. It fulfills many firsts, including Yerson’s first specialty lot, the first time his coffee is available outside of Colombia, and the first time his coffee is available in the US, exclusively at Coffea.
Yerson is motivated and sees specialty coffee as a vehicle for providing for his family. “My dream is that through coffee, I'll be able to build a home for my family,” says Yerson. We’re excited to offer this delicious coffee for the first time; in the cup, look for tasting notes of soft tropical and stone fruits accompanied by a creamy body.
