Sopade

Regular price

This is our first time buying coffee from this cooperative, Sopade.  We love coffees from DR Congo so we're very happy to have two different offerings this year.  In the cup, expect tartness reminiscent of cranberry balanced by a heaviness and earthiness reminiscent of dried fruit and rooibos.

Origin: South Kivu, D.R. Congo
Processing: Washed
Varietal: Bourbon

Elevation: 1514-1950 MASL
Tasting Notes: Dried Fruit, Cranberry, Rooibos

Importing Partner: Optimist Coffee Traders

Sopade is a cooperative society created in 2017 by a group of smallholder coffee farmers who were frustrated by the marginalization they experienced in larger cooperatives and wanted to create a model for future cooperatives to follow. From 2017 to 2020, it operated as a non-profit association, but with evolving circumstances, it is now officially recognized as a company. The Sopade Coffee Agricultural Cooperative has 818 members, including 207 women, who collectively manage 242 hectares of land with 610,071 coffee trees. Sopade produces high-quality specialty Arabica coffee, certified organic, reflecting its adherence to sustainability standards. The cooperative has a washing station, a warehouse built with durable materials, and two motorized canoes for transporting coffee cherries. It also has a vehicle for staff transportation and supports members through village savings and credit associations to help ensure their financial autonomy. Sopade is a full member of the Network of Coffee and Cocoa Producing Cooperatives (RCPCA) headquartered in Goma, DRC.

Our coffee bags are now recyclable - just return your used bag to any of our cafés and we'll take care of the rest.
