When this coffee from the Aceh region of Sumatra came across our cupping table, we could have wagered that it was from Kenya due to its vibrant profile. We were pleasantly and thoroughly surprised to find that it was in fact from Sumatra. This is the first offering we’ve had from Sumatra in quite some time, and we’re excited to share it with you. In the cup, we find notes of hibiscus and dried fruit with a juicy body.

Origin: Aceh, Sumatra, Indonesia
Processing: Washed
Varietal: Ateng, Bor Bor, Catimor, Timor

Elevation: 1300-1650 MASL
Tasting Notes: Hibiscus, Juicy, Dried Fruit

Cup of Excellence winner Asman Arianto is behind this outstanding coffee from Aceh, Sumatra. Aceh is a region in northern Sumatra and is home to the Barisan Mountains as well as Lake Taboa, the largest volcanic lake in the world. Coffees here are grown in the rainforest covering the mountains. The region is very geographically diverse, and 95% of coffees are grown by smallholder farmers - the average farm size is 2.5 acres. Unlike most Sumatran coffees, this coffee is a washed process, and the results are clear to see in the cup - pleasant medium acidity accompanying balanced notes of hibiscus, dried fruit, and citrus. We hope that this is a harbinger of more great coffees to come from Sumatra.

Our coffee bags are now recyclable - just return your used bag to any of our cafés and we'll take care of the rest.
