"I don't consider myself to be a coffee farmer, because coffee is everything to me. All my time and energy are placed into the beans that I harvest and process." So says Tesfaye Bekele, the founder of Suke Farm and washing station. His journey has taken him in many different directions, his work for the Natural Resource and Environmental Protection for the government of Ethiopia eventually leading him to specialty coffee. He continues "I come from a coffee-producing family, so during my childhood, I started to work with coffee early on. At first, coffee did not have my interest. The labor was hard, and the days were long. But after several years of study and other work I returned to my home in Shakisso Woreda, Guji. I found myself in coffee again." What Tesfaye undertook upon returning to Guji was nothing short of extraordinary: after bushfires destroyed 5000 forest acres in the Guji zone, which Bekele was responsible for in his government post, he turned to coffee as a way to revitalize the land and the livelihoods of the communities there. He distributed seedlings to the community and also started his own farm as a way to show that coffee was possible, even though it requires patience and 3-5 years to start to see the results. Today, Tesfaye works together with 171 outgrowers that deliver cherries to the Suke Quto washing station. Along with the hundreds of well paying jobs that have been created, Tesfaye is also investing in the community, recently opening a new school building in the village of Kurume. Tesfaye is committed to the environment, and this coffee is organic and rainforest alliance certified.
