There are a few legendary accounts detailing the origin of the name. The first is that a monk went to the village well looking for water and instead met a dragon. The dragon instructed the monk to pray for water. The monk prayed and the rain came, and they named the village Longjing to commemorate the well of the dragon. The other one is that the well in the village was so deep that nobody could see the bottom, but they believed that there was an underwater spring coming from the ocean that supplied the well. When it would rain, waters with two different densities and temperatures would swirl around looking like a dragon was swimming in the well.
